Blog Pet Insurance Reviews

Steve Posted on by Steve

Did you know there is 1 in 3 chance that your pet will experience an accident or illness each year?  Here’s just a sample of recent pet insurance claims paid to our customers to help them care for their four-legged family members.

RECENT DECEMBER PET INSURANCE CLAIMS

Pet
Sherman, Chow Chow mix

What was wrong?
Sherman had bilateral luxating patella repair. This included pre and post operative x-rays, blood work, anesthesia, surgery, hospitalization and prescription medications.

Total Veterinary Bill
$ 2,557.01

Healthy Paws Reimbursement
$ 2,251.31
*(based on pet’s annual deductible and reimbursement level):

How is Sherman doing?
“The vet says he’s doing wonderfully. Full recovery! He’s back to running
and jumping and is so playful now! I attributed his disinterest in playing
to simply growing up and maturing. I had no idea he’d been in so much pain.
He never whined or whimpered. If the owner of doggie daycare hadn’t said
something during Sherman’s swim class, who knows how long he’d have
suffered. He’s my first dog. Anyway, it’s been such a relief to have him
back on his feet. Thank you so much!”

Princess Toadstool, a Bowser dog covered by Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

Princess Toadstool (front) and Bowser

Designer breeds are always emerging. The latest and greatest mixed breed is a Schnauzer and a Beagle, better known as a Bowser!

Corey and April are blessed enough to enjoy two of these fun loving dogs in their household. Any Mario Brothers video game fans will know Bowser as the crazy turtle character. So what better names for two Bowser dogs than Princess Toadstool and Bowser!

Bower is the easy, laid back one of the furry pack, while Princess Toadstool likes to get into trouble. Both have Healthy Paws dog insurance. On New Year’s day, Princess got a bit too excited as the ball dropped, landed wrong when she jumped off the couch, and started limping.

Corey knew he could take her to the ER with the peace of mind that his Healthy Paws dog insurance would cover the costs. (Unfortunately, this was not Princess’ first dog insurance claim, as she had been treated for a urinary tract infection in late December.)

The emergency clinic doctor took x-rays, placed a cast to keep the area stable, and recommended pain medication and rest with recheck x-rays in a few weeks.

We’re pleased to report that after 3 sets of follow up x-rays and pretty new colored bandages, Princess Peg Leg, as she has been lovingly nicknamed, is fully healed!

Pet Name: Princess Toadstool
Type of Pet: Bowser (Schnauzer/Beagle mix)
Cost of Vet Bills: $1,971.46

Eddie, a Healthy Paws Dog Insurance customer

Little Eddie, a happy Healthy Paws Customer

When Tammy T. adopted Eddie, an American Hairless Terrier, she looked into pet health insurance. It’s a good thing she got him enrolled with Healthy Paws, because Eddie has become a frequent flier at the veterinarian!

It all started as a simple rash. But it soon turned into allergy testing, multiple baths each week, special dog food, and even allergy shots.

So far Eddie is doing quite well, and his allergies are under much better control these days.

Tammy is thankful to have Eddie covered with Healthy Paws. “You expect fees for shots, spaying or neutering, but you really never expect the unexpected.  Having this insurance has been a blessing and I wanted to say thank you.”

Pet Name: Eddie
Type of Pet: American Hairless Terrier
Cost of Vet Bills: $3,709.22
Amount Healthy Paws Reimbursed: $2,158.68
(based on customer selected annual deductible and reimbursement level)

Dash the Beagle. Pet insurance claim story

Dash looks so comfortable, doesn't he?

A few weeks ago, Dash started vomiting, and was yelping out in pain. He stopped eating, and Mark T. took him to his veterinarian.

Dash had x-rays, bloodwork, IV fluids, injections, and was ultimately sent home on medication for his tummy issues.
The medication did its job. Dash’s vet recently gave him a clean bill of health at his follow-up appointment.

“During this time of stress, Healthy Paws has really been a huge support,” Mark says. “I’m so happy that my wife and I decided to go with you over the many other pet insurances that we researched.”

We are so happy Dash is feeling better!

Koko, a Healthy Paws cat insurance customer

Koko, a satisfied Healthy Paws customer

“Some people believe that their indoor cat doesn’t need pet insurance,” Larry S. says. “I think they are making a serious mistake. Koko is a good example ….”

Koko is a “miracle kitty” for Larry. When Larry and his late wife Naoko decided to take a brand new route on their walk one day back in 2007, they saw an incredibly thin cat sitting on a rock near the trail. Naoko called the cat, who came right over. It was clear that she had been starving, and she cried a lot and was dirty.

Larry had never been close to a cat, and until then didn’t really like them. Little Koko won him over, as she was instantly affectionate with the couple, who regularly brought her food for a few weeks.

When Larry and Naoko learned there were coyotes in the area and realized the weather was cooling, they brought Koko home, even though their complex had become a “no pets allowed” property. As Larry tells Healthy Paws, “That’s a whole other story!” Koko became part of the family.

Naoko passed away suddenly and tragically in late 2009. Since then, this cat that she so lovingly cared for has become a connection between Larry had his late wife.

Koko has been a healthy indoor cat, and recently went in for a routine dental cleaning. Though her exam that day was fine, Koko had a seizure and went in to cardiac arrest from an anaphylactic reaction to a medication given before the cleaning began.

Living up to the “miracle kitty” name, the vet was able to revive her with CPR. Koko was monitored at an emergency clinic and stayed on IV fluids and oxygen for the next few days. Poor Koko even lost her sight for about five days.

Larry reports that Koko is doing wonderful now, and is basically back to her normal self. “I am grateful to my vet, the emergency hospital, and, of course, Healthy Paws. There was no way that I could have paid a few thousand dollars for the vet and emergency hospital bills.”

Pet Name: Koko
Type of Pet: American Shorthair Cat
Cost of Vet Bills: $2,704.59
Amount Healthy Paws Reimbursed: $2,229.15
(based on customer selected annual deductible and reimbursement level)

Saxa, a Husky Mix

Saxa before her injury

Saxa, a Husky mix, was hit by a car in late June. When Wyley H. had Saxa treated at the vet, they discovered that the head of her femur was fractured in multiple places.

Saxa underwent surgery to remove all of the tiny fractured splinters of bone and to level the head of the femur. She ultimately needed a second surgery to clean up more pieces of bone, and has since been receiving water therapy.

Wyley recently told us, “Saxa is definitely recovering quickly since her second surgery; hopefully she’ll be back on all four legs after a couple more weeks of water therapy.”

Having your pet hit by a car is probably one of the worst things a pet parent can imagine. We’re so happy that Saxa’s story is getting a happy ending, and we were there to help!

“Saxa is smiling more and more every day since her surgery and subsequent therapy sessions,” Wyley says. “It has been great to have Healthy Paws’ support throughout the process.”

Sophie the Papillon

Love those ears! Sophie is doing great since her surgery.

Sophie is a young Papillon who is absolutely loved by Lorri R. One day Sophie started walking funny, and her mom knew something just wasn’t right. Their veterinarian diagnosed Sophie with a luxating patella, and wanted to postpone surgery until Sophie was a little older.

Lorri needed the peace of mind that she was doing the right thing, so she sought a second opinion. The second veterinarian recommended surgery sooner, suggesting that the sooner they fixed her knees, the sooner she could start the recovery process.

After a bit of a rough recovery (she developed an infection from the trachea tube), Lorri is happy to report Sophie is doing very well with her recovery! She is following doctors’ orders for recuperation, despite the fact that she’s running in this picture. Don’t you just love those ears?

Pet Name: Sophie
Type of Pet: Papillon
Cost of Vet Bills: $4,275.32
Amount Healthy Paws Reimbursed: $3,437.00 (based on customer selected annual deductible and reimbursement level)

Alex and Stella, his Labrador Retriever

Stella the Labrador is healing well!

Stella is an energetic 6-year-old Labrador Retriever who recently started limping. When Alex W. took her in for an exam in early July, she was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Stella was sent home with some pain medication, and TPLO surgery was scheduled.

We’re happy to report that Stella is doing great since her surgery, and is expected to make an excellent recovery! Alex tells us she quickly got her personality back and is moving around well.

Pet Name: Stella
Type of Pet: Labrador Retriever
Cost of Vet Bills: $2,751.54
Amount Healthy Paws Reimbursed: $2,148.99 (based on customer selected annual deductible and reimbursement level)

Are you on the Healthy Paws bus?! (Photo courtesy of TBO.com)

Every day we get such great comments from our pet parents! It might be the level of coverage we provide (up to 90% based on customer selection), the smiling voice they hear on the phone (our customer care team is made up of former vet techs), our fast reimbursements (within 10 days) or just how much we all love pets (we all volunteer and support animal rescue groups (through the Healthy Paws Foundation)!

Whatever the reason, sometimes we just have to share these great reviews with you. Here’s what Carie had to say about her experience with Healthy Paws recently:

Healthy Paws is Super! - We’ve only ever had two pet insurance plans, the first one for over 10 years with our beloved pooch who passed in 2009. Then we adopted a rescue in 2010 and I started researching insurances like crazy trying to find the best fit…I initially chose Healthy Paws because of their believe and backing with rescues, but now after filing two claims I’ve realized how absolutely amazing they are and will never look for another insurance again.

You know how you wait around to see if your insurance company has even gotten your claim? Well, Healthy Paws replies within 48 hours that they have received it and that it’s in process. Then another 1-5 days later you receive a very nice email with a PDF of the breakdown of how they are handling the situation.

So, stop looking and comparing…the bus stops right at Healthy Paws and you won’t need a return bus ride anywhere!”

Just love the bus analogy! Don’t you?

Kato holding still for the camera. Not his usual speed.

Kato is a “warrior kitty.” Yes, you know the kind… He is usually a very healthy boy but somehow manages to surprise his mom with injuries that appear out of the blue!

Caroline G. comes home from work sometimes wondering what Kato’s gotten into now! In the past six months Kato’s been enrolled with Healthy Paws, he’s had a soft tissue injury in his back end (“what a pain in the you know where!”), bite wounds on his face, and most recently, greeted his pet mom at the end of the day with both canines on his left side fractured up into the gums.

Most pet insurance companies don’t cover any dental work or treatments. Healthy Paws covers dental work and extractions, as long as the treatment is related to an injury. Kato’s dental work was very much related to an injury he sustained. Wish we had a video camera to see exactly how he managed this!

At the end of the day, Healthy Paws covered the tooth extractions and treatment with antibiotics and pain medication.

Now, it’s been almost two months. Kato’s parents are keeping their fingers crossed that he doesn’t get into, on top of or flip over anything for a while!

To thank Healthy Paws for helping his parents take care of him, Kato emailed us after his last incident, and had this to say:

I want to thank you for helping out with my medical expenses.
I promise I will try to be a good boy from now on!
Love, Kato
(Check out my photo – aren’t I cute?)”
