shepherd dog review of pet insurance

On March 7th, Ria was in the yard playing with the neighbor dog when her dad, Indrani, heard her yelp out.  He saw his three-year-old Shepherd mix dog limping towards him. Ria looked like she had injured her left back leg, so he rushed her right to her local veterinarian.  She was in so much pain the vet wasn’t able to perform a full physical exam on her.  The vet decided to put her on some pain and inflammation medication and wanted her to come back for a recheck after she wasn’t so in pain.

She was recovering well at home but a bit later Ria’s dog walker noticed she was starting to limp more on her left hind leg again.  The walker took her to the vet and they refilled her medication and scheduled a surgery for April 5th.

During the surgery, Ria’s veterinarian discovered she had torn her left Anterior Cruciate Ligament.  A Tibial Tuberosity Advancement was performed and she did great through the surgery.  The doctor took x-rays after her surgery and confirmed her hips and her other leg were all in great condition.

Today, Ria is recovering very well at home and scheduled for her follow up x-rays in the next couple weeks.

Pet Name: Ria
Type of Pet: Shepherd Mix

yorkshire terrier

Goober is a spunky 1 1/2 year old Yorkshire Terrier. In January of this year, Goober started having random episodes of vomiting and diarrhea.  When Natasa M. first took him to the vet, he was diagnosed with pancreatitis.  A few weeks later, it got worse.  He was hospitalized for a condition called Hemorragic Gastroenteritis. With lots of TLC and hugs, Goober recovered and was well for a while.

Then in February, he had to be brought back to the hospital and this time he was in really bad shape. After a round of x-rays, an ultrasound, bloodwork, gastrointestinal endoscope and days as an inpatient at the hospital, Goober was finally sent home to await his test results.

A few days later, his test results showed he had a condition called Moderate Lymphplasmacytic Enteritis, which is the most common form of canine Irritable Bowel Disease.  Since being diagnosed, he was put on some different medications and his mom changed his diet. He’s been doing a lot better and hasn’t been into the vet’s office since!

Pet Name: Goober
Type of Pet: Yorkshire Terrier
Cost of Vet Bills: $5,651.36
Amount Healthy Paws Reimbursed: $4,630.32 (based on customer selected annual deductible and reimbursement level)

golden retriever

Last March, after Richard R. had to put down his long time friend, a 12-year-old Golden Retriever, he decided he was ready for his next Golden buddy. He popped into a local rescue group, and found Simba! Simba, a great 7 year old Golden at the time, was doing well and adjusting to his new diet for some emerging allergies. Richard decided to protect Simba with a Healthy Paws Pet Insurance policy only two months after adopting Simba because you just never know what could happen.

One more recent Saturday morning, Richard noticed that Simba  just wasn’t acting right. He took him into his regular vet for an appointment. After running some bloodwork, Richard and his vet decided Simba’s condition was serious and he needed to be seen by a specialist. At the specialty hospital, they did more lab work and a fine needle aspiration of a swollen lymphnode. The veterinarian diagnosed him with a type of cancer associated with the lymphatic system. An ultrasound showed that the cancer had already spread into the liver and spleen, so surgery was not an option.

Richard and the vets decided to start a first round of chemotherapy while they awaited a final diagnosis. The diagnosis came back as a different and sometimes worse cancer called Histiocytic sarcoma. Simba vistited the specialty center the very next day to received his new round of chemotherapy medications. One week after treatment, Simba is already showing signs of improvement! He is scheduled for another ultrasound in three weeks. We are all keeping our fingers crossed that Simba and his wonderful family get better soon, and the cancer’s been !

Pet Name: Simba
Type of Pet: Golden Retriever
Cost of Vet Bills: $1,828.73
Amount Healthy Paws Reimbursed: $1,433.46 (based on customer selected annual deductible and reimbursement level)

puppy

A St. Bernard puppy enjoying fall. (Photo courtesy of Wikipedia)

Gus is a 10 month old Saint Bernard who accidentally chewed through and swallowed some of his dad’s prescription medications.  He was rushed to the emergency veterinarian, who got him to throw up and gave him activated charcoal to absorb any ingested medication. (NOTE: Do not try to do this at home. Always bring your pet to a veterinarian’s office if you suspect he or she has swallowed something life-threatening.) Gus also had blood tests done in addition to receiving IV fluids in case he got dehydrated from the pills or vomiting.

Pet Name: Gus
Type of Pet: Saint Bernard
Cost of Vet Bills: $583.49
Amount Healthy Paws Reimbursed: $353.43 (reimbursed with 72 hours of claim filing, based on customer selected annual deductible and reimbursement level)

This was Gus’ first incident while protected by Healthy Paws coverage, and he’s back to being happy and healthy today. And his dad, John B., was happy with how simple it was to submit the claim and get reimbursed right away!

Fun Fact: Did you know St. Bernards are no longer used for alpine rescues? Today, they usually compete in sports like carting and weight pulling.

Lola looking healthy and happy!

Joseph and Jessica were in for a rough ride with their English Bulldog, Lola, on a Friday night. She threw up immediately after eating her dinner and continued vomiting throughout the night. They took her to her veterinarian on Saturday, where she was given fluids and had some x-rays taken. Lola seemed to feel little better after the trip. By Sunday, Lola was able to keep small meals down throughout the day but still seemed a bit lethargic. When Monday evening rolled around she started vomiting all over again and it continued through the night. Poor Lola just wasn’t herself.

After another trip to her regular vet, her parents decided to pursue an ultrasound at a veterinary specialty center. The ultrasound showed something was obstructing her small intestine, which had also caused at least a partial tear in her digestive tract. Lola was taken into surgery to remove the foreign object, and since part of her small intestine had been damaged, a small section of that had to be removed as well. After surgery, she recovered well and is now back to her old self. Thank goodness!

Pet Name: Lola
Type of Pet: English Bulldog
Cost of Vet Bills: $4,497.54
Amount Healthy Paws Reimbursed: $3,794.20 (reimbursed with 72 hours of claim filing, based on customer selected annual deductible and reimbursement level)

Lola’s parents had this to say about their experience with Healthy Paws, “We wanted to take a moment to tell you what a great job our claims rep did handling our claims. She was very helpful and made us feel at ease. We are grateful for everything Healthy Paws does for our little Lola! Thank you for delivering on your promises as a company, we recommend you to everyone we know!”

person and healthy puppy

Great love and smiles like these are worth protecting!

Cindi K. adopted Mika, a Bernese Mountain Dog, in October of 2008 when she was just 8 weeks old. Cindi and her husband, Steve, had two 14-year-old dogs at the time and weren’t planning on adding a third, but we all know how that story goes. As soon as they saw Mika, they fell in love.

Interesting tidbit: Cindi’s husband is the one who came up with Mika’s name. It means “intelligent raccoon” in Sioux, and fits the “little” girl perfectly with her Berner face and natural curious and fun-loving personality!

Mika settled right into her new home with Cindy and Steve. She love playing with stuffies and squeaky toys, and traveling across the country with her family.

The summer after Mika’s family took her in, their two older dogs passed away. While Mika enjoyed the company of the family cats just fine, Cindi and Steve decided to rescue another dog. They soon took in another Bernese Mountain Dog, Takoda, who had come out of a neglectful situation. Again, a Berner gained a Sioux name. Takoda means “friend to everyone,” and he certainly is!

Takoda and Mika – only six months apart and still full of energy – are best friends and love to play together.

Last fall, Cindi and Steve started to look into pet insurance, thinking it might be a good idea if they could find something affordable.  Cindi went to several websites for quotes, waded through loads of information, and was most impressed with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance.  They decided to enroll both Mika and Takoda with Healthy Paws in October of 2010.  As it turns out, that was a great decision!

In February of 2011, Mika started having some issues with her stifle.  She and Takoda play like big dogs in the snow and ice, and sometimes don’t know their own strength.  She went into her vet after she had started limping a bit, and the vet  suspects she may have OCD or early onset degenerative ACL disease and osteoarthritis.

Based on their vet’s recommendation, Mika’s family has started her on joint supplement therapy and physical therapy sessions. These are helping her maintain  joint stability and avoid surgery in the future. She is doing really well with this treatment and by adhering to an appropriate regimen of exercise and diet.

Pet Name: Mika
Type of Pet: Bernese Mountain Dog
Cost of Vet Bills To-date: $941.80
Amount Healthy Paws reimbursed: $407.55 (reimbursed with 72 hours of claim filing, based on customer selected annual deductible and reimbursement level)

happy dogs

Mika and Takoda snuggling.

Cindi says, “We don’t know for sure how long Mika’s recovery is going to take but we seem to be well on our way there.  It is a comfort to know that we have some financial help if anything gets worse, which we are taking all measures to insure against. We have been very pleased with how friendly and helpful the Healthy Paws folks have been and how easy they have made it for us to submit claims.  I have already recommended Healthy Paws to a number of our friends who have dogs and cats.  I can’t imagine getting better service or a better plan!”

Bu looking healthy and happy!

Kathleen K. and her husband had a eight-year-old Golden Retriever pass away seven years ago. He had tumors and a lot of other medical issues over the years.  After many years of a great life (and many high vet bills!) in their loving home, he finally passed away from a bout with cancer. Kathleen didn’t have a dog for 6 years after her dog’s passing because the condo they moved into didn’t allow pets.

Once they moved out of the condo, Kathleen started looking for their new best friend. They found a little black puppy that Kathleen fell in love with. Her husband told her he thought it was a good idea to wait, but went back to pick the puppy up himself as a Christmas surprise!

Because of their past experience with unexpected vet bill costs, Kathleen and her husband decided to get pet insurance shortly after bringing their new puppy, Bu, home. They didn’t want to go through the heartache and worry of deciding how to cover high medical costs associated with whatever colds Bu might get or the more serious stuff they had gone through with their last pup. After researching all their options, they decided Healthy Paws Pet Insurance had the best coverage and care.

Since getting used to his new home and getting signed up for pet insurance, Bu has gotten used to regular dog park trips where he gets all of his “crazies” and wiggles out – like any young 17-month-old dog.

Recently, after one of these dog park trips, Bu started limping around quite a bit. After going into the hospital, the veterinarian determined he needed surgery because it seemed that a romp at the dog park aggravated a luxating patella issue in his knee. Kathleen took her pup into his surgery on a Friday, Healthy Paws received all his paperwork and the claim from Bu’s vet on that following Wednesday, and the reimbursement check was send out that Friday (only a week after his surgery!).  Their pet insurance covered the surgery, all the x-rays, the anesthetic, and all the other costs associated with getting Bu’s knee back to normal!

The Details
Pet Name: Bu
Type of Pet: Lab/Chow Mix
Cost of Vet Bills to Date: $2,625.66
Amount Healthy Paws Pet Insurance reimbursed: $2,222.68 (reimbursed with 72 hours of claim filing, based on customer selected annual deductible and reimbursement level)

Healthy Paws check in with Kathleen, her husband and Bu after the surgery (as we do with all our little recovery cases) and it sounds like everyone’s back on their feet and getting ready for another dog park trip soon!

When Morton H. picked up his longhaired Dachshund, Taz, from a stay at his friend’s home, he noticed that his best friend was having difficulty using his rear legs. The following day Morton brought Taz to see his veterinarian, and learned that Taz was paralyzed and needed a visit to a specialized surgeon! After taking an MRI at the surgical center, Taz was diagnosed was an acute onset of Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) and needed surgery right away . The estimate the surgeon gave Morton for Taz’s operation was between $7,000 – $8,300 – and he said the surgery center needed an 80% deposit before they would could do anything to help little Taz.

Morton called Healthy Paws Pet Insurance to make sure this procedure was covered and he would be reimbursed the costs. We wanted to make sure that we were able to review Taz’s medical records quickly, so Morton wouldn’t have to wait any longer to make a decision on Taz’s surgery, so four of our customer care team members reviewed all the records (and even worked with Taz’s vet to find missing records) and confirmed the procedure would be covered within the same day! Once Morton and the surgeon understood that we would reimburse 90% of the surgical and treatment costs, we all jumped for joy and Taz got the treatment he so desperately needed!

Taz’s Pet Insurance Details

Type of Pet: Longhaired Dachshund

Pet Parent Name: Morton H.

Cost of Vet Bills to-date: $8,144.44

Amount we reimbursed: $6,975.13 (after annual deductible and exam fees)

We’ve been in contact with both the surgeon and Morton since Taz’s operation, and they both say that Taz is recovering well! They told us that with the proper rehabiliation (which we will also cover at 90%) the chances of Taz being able to walk again are looking up!

You never would’ve guessed it, right? Michael has Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for his adorable French Bulldog, Bambi, and gets right to point about how important it is to have pet insurance.

Just to give a little more context his family has had German Shepherds in the past, and a few of them have had different medical issues and treatments. One in specific kept eating tennis balls. As much as they could, Michael’s family tried to hide tennis balls from him, but before they knew it, he was on the operating table again needing to get some yellow fuzz removed. So when Michael got his own puppy, he wanted to make sure he’d always be prepared to cover Bambi’s veterinary bills, whether she got sick or developed her own tennis ball eating habit.

Michael did his homework, and found that Healthy Paws Pet Insurance coverage was really affordable for a purebred French Bulldog and covered congenital and hereditary conditions. It was really important to him that genetic conditions were covered, because Frenchies are very susceptible to developing thyroid and respiratory issues.

Here are Michael’s thoughts on the value of pet insurance and how you can save money on your veterinary bills by getting your dog covered:

Do you have a French Bulldog? Do you ever worry about their possible genetic conditions? Does pet insurance give you peace of mind about being able to afford your veterinary bills?
