Cady Recovers from Dog Attack Injuries

Ever wonder if pet insurance would be a good choice for you and your pet? If you want to be able to say yes to the best veterinary care for your pet if they get sick or injured, you should probably consider pet insurance.

Pet parent Kiesha recalls the horrifying day when her 4-month old puppy Cady was viciously attacked by a dog separated from his owner for just a split-second. “The visit to the vet was nerve-wracking because of the severity of Cady’s injuries. We really thought we were going to lose her.”

Kiesha never expected anything like this to happen to her friendly, lovable pup. “My favorite thing about Cady’s personality is her abundant love for everyone and everything. She has the biggest heart and literally hugs people whenever she can!” Her husband was walking Cady on the day she was attacked. “Thankfully, without our 8-year-old son. He was extremely shaken by the incident.”

The dog had laid into Cady’s abdomen and barely avoided damaging any internal organs; Cady’s pet parents took her to the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SF SPCA) urgent care facility at once. “I’d had experience with the SF SPCA for both emergency and specialty visits – my last dog had a root canal there. I have always loved their vets, staff and overall commitment to animal care.” Cady’s wounds were treated and she stayed overnight, requiring a few follow-up appointments. Luckily, Kiesha is a Healthy Paws Pet Insurance customer and was able to save $2,111 in vet bills and just focus on getting Cady back to her normal self.

Taking the Worry Out

“The vet visit was stressful, but everyone at did a great job of keeping us calm and making it clear they knew what they were doing,” Kiesha says. Cady fully recovered from the attack and is back to giving people her signature bear-hugs, playing with dogs of every shape and size, and of course, splashing in every puddle she finds.

She continues that submitting the claim to Healthy Paws was hardly a hurdle, either: “The process with Healthy Paws was amazing. It was so easy to submit the claim, and the payment was processed way more quickly than I could ever have expected.”

How Does Pet Insurance Work?

Pet insurance is for those unexpected accidents and illnesses you just can’t plan for, like Cady’s injury or if your cat is diagnosed with diabetes. With Healthy Paws Pet Insurance, pet parents are covered for accidents and illnesses, and can be reimbursed up to 90% on those vet bills.

Enrollment is processed online; pet parents enter the information about their pet, their location, and the reimbursement/deductible choice. Premiums for cats start around $15/month; dogs start around $25/month. After the 15-day waiting period ends, coverage begins and pet parents can see any licensed veterinarian for treatment, just like those at the SF SPCA. After veterinary visits, you pay your vet directly for treatment, then submit your claim by taking a photo of the vet bill and upload it via the Healthy Paws mobile app or website to get reimbursed. That’s it!

Pets are commonly treated at emergency veterinary facilities for accidents and the sudden onset of a serious illness. Healthy Paws has seen the most claims from stomach issues (such as when the dog eats something he shouldn’t or when the cat suddenly starts vomiting), however everything from limping to eye infections are in the top ten most common ailments filed.
