Can Dogs Eat Watermelon?
Yes, watermelon is okay for your dog to eat!
Watermelon is a human-beloved summer fruit, and the great news is – it’s safe, yummy, and hydrating for dogs, so you can share a slice with your pup! Here are a few things to remember:
- Remove the majority of seeds, which can cause intestinal discomfort or even blockage if too many are ingested.
- Don’t let your dog eat the rind because it can cause tummy upset.
- Watermelon is 92 percent water, which means it’s a great hydrating snack for pups and can be especially refreshing during the summer months – aka preventing heat stroke.
Watermelon is full of vitamins A, B6 and C, which can boost your dog’s immune system, provide a little energy and is also good for their eyes and teeth. There’s also only about 50 calories to a cup, so it’s a healthier choice than say, cheese or hot dogs. As always, watch your dog for any reactions, and keep the watermelon treats to a minimum; even though it is a low fat, low calorie option, it does have naturally occurring sugar.
DID YOU KNOW: National Watermelon Day is August 3rd! During the dog days of summer, you can freeze cubed watermelon for a quick and cool treat for your pups. Creative pet parents also recommend pupsicles made by blending watermelon with low fat (no sugar) yogurt and freezing into molds, using a rawhide-alternative chewy as the pupsicle stick. No stick, no problem – check out these yogurt-and-watermelon treats instead.
