10 Years of Healthy Paws: Meet Tim Weiss, Claws and Paws Protector

Many of our pet parents know him as the “Claws and Paws Protector,” but few know much about one of our longest employees, Tim Weiss. As Healthy Paws celebrates our 10th anniversary, we asked Tim about his experience with the company. He officially joined the insurance side in 2013, but has been involved with the Healthy Paws Foundation since 2010.

“Well, when I started there were seven of us, including Rob and Jack Jackson, Steve Siadek, and Jen Sherwood,” says Tim. “Now, we must have about a hundred employees!” He’s not kidding – Healthy Paws employs 136 people in customer care, marketing, technology, and operations. By the end of 2018, Healthy Paws had 350k pets enrolled and had just surpassed 70k claims in a month. And even though we’ve grown leaps and bounds, Tim maintains that the culture has remained the same since he started: “When it comes to policies and people, it sticks with me that the larger we’ve gotten, the smaller we need to act,” explains Tim. “It doesn’t matter how big we get, we take great care – and strive continually to do so – to treat customers like we’re a small company.”

Then & Now

With our growth and partnership with our parent company, Aon, Tim points out that lots of good things have happened – “All those great benefits exist because of Aon, but putting that aside, Healthy Paws is still the same company Rob, Steve, and Jack created. That is still a constant of who we are: we make sure the people we hire truly care about pets and one of our priorities is the Healthy Paws Foundation. This continues our legacy; lots of other companies lose who they are as they grow and merge, but not Healthy Paws.”

And where we’re headed is something to be excited about too! Healthy Paws has invested plenty of time and support to speeding up claims so pet parents don’t have to wait for filed claims to pay out. “I’m excited about how the team is investigating on the automation side where no matter how quickly we grow, we’re always going to be able to respond to pet parents as quickly as possible,” says Tim. “We are constantly improving and innovating to work more efficiently, which allows us to give our pet parents that white glove treatment we’re known for.”

We’re a Pet Company

“One of the things is, since I’ve been part of Healthy Paws, I’ve never once thought of myself as working for an insurance company,” says Tim. “I’ve always been working for a pet company. When someone asks me what I do for a living, I say I work in pet insurance. Then I explain it: we’re not here to sell insurance, we’re here to take care of pets.”

And taking care of pets is what Tim does, every day, by chatting with some of our more intense claims – pet parents who have filed thousands of dollars for pets who may have a chronic condition, sudden trauma, or are gravely ill. “As soon as I get up for the day, I check my email and I look forward to those pet parent responses that tell us: ‘we can’t thank you enough for allowing us to focus on our pet’s care’ or they praise the customer care team. It’s the culmination of what we are there for! We get hundreds of thousands of pet parents who are happy with our service. I see that every day, and it’s the best.”

Over the years, Tim has been a pet parent to both dogs and cats, but also has had snakes, turtles, and a lizard or two. Many of you have been in contact with Tim and know how warm, funny, and truly caring of an individual he is. To that, we at Healthy Paws want to thank him for stickin’ around for so long, and hope you experience the ‘white glove treatment’ Tim has worked so hard to uphold.
